Mural from a design by Friedrich Sustris, 1575/79
This view of the Fools’ Staircase shows, on the left, the servant Zanni, who is conducting a noble lady (possibly the duchess) down the stairs. They are followed by a comedian in a red-and-white harlequin costume and a young woman with a basket of flowers. This motif was evidently considered suitable for the rooms of the ducal heiress, which were located here, immediately above the rooms of the ducal heir. She could descend directly into her husband’s cabinet.
